Section Summary:
In many hotels payment cards are the most common method
used to pay guest charges. The best tactic to ensure that no problems arise dur-
ing check-out is to conduct proper authorization during check-in. This involves
blocking the amount of the estimated guest charge. If the amount is not approved,
the card’s limit has probably been reached, and the front desk agent must deter-
mine creditworthiness in another way.
It is equally important to monitor a guest’s credit limit during his or her stay. If
the amount initially authorized is exceeded, or soon will be, by charges to the guest
folio, the front desk agent will have to reauthorize the card for a larger amount. If
additional credit cannot be established, it may be necessary to remove the guest
from the hotel for nonpayment.
