Foodservices Segment
Travelers must, of course, eat while they are away from home. They often do so in
many of the same foodservice operations used by community residents who are
dining out for business or social purposes. A wide variety of foodservice busi-
nesses generate profits from the sale of their products and services to travelers and
area residents. These are referred to as commercial foodservice operations. In
contrast, there is another type of foodservice: noncommercial foodservice oper-
ations, which are not in business primarily to generate profits from food and bev-
erage products. Instead, they are offered by organizations, such as schools and
hospitals, which exist to educate and provide health services, respectively, but in
the process provide foodservice to their constituents (e.g., students, patients,
employees). These two types of operations are part of the foodservices segment of
the hospitality industry.
