HIA (high-speed Internet access)
Technology required to allow hotel guests to access the
Internet at download speeds much higher than those that can be achieved with traditional
telephone dial-up systems.

Hold
Action taken by a hotel notifying a payment card administrator or issuer that a card-
holder will likely be charged for a specific dollar amount. In response, if the card has suffi-
cient credit available (or, in the case of debit cards, sufficient funds on deposit), this amount
will be “held” until the charge is either initiated or until the hold is released. Sometimes
referred to as placing a block or authorization on a card. Used as in, “Put an additional $500
hold on Mr. Lacey’s Visa card because he has decided to stay three more nights.”
