OVERVIEW OF THE LODGING INDUSTRY
SECTION REVIEW AND DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Section Objective:
Provide an overview of common ways to classify hotels.
Section Summary:
Hotels can be classified by location, by rate, and by size. They
can also be classified by considering the types of guests who use them: full-
service hotels, limited-service hotels, extended-stay hotels, convention hotels and
conference centers, and resorts and time-shares.
Discussion Questions:
1. What types of factors do you consider when you make a decision about staying
at a lodging property?
2. What impact, if any, does the purpose of your visit (to the property or the com-
munity) have on your decision?
3. What are your expectations as a guest staying at a full-service hotel, a limited-
service hotel, an extended-stay property, a convention hotel or conference
center, or a resort or time-share?
4. If you were the manager of a full-service hotel and thought you were losing
market share to a nearby limited-service property, what practical tactics might
you use to increase the sale of your guestrooms?
