Tagging Trash
Most people forget about their garbage once it is out of sight—in trash cans! However, scientists are 
concerned about the impact trash has on the environment once it reaches its final destination, which is 
often an overflowing landfill. Although many people recycle, there are still just as many people who do not. 
Scientists believe that if people can see where their trash goes, they will be less likely to throw recyclable 
items into trash cans. They have conducted a research study involving small electronic tags that can 
attach to garbage.
How do trash tags work?
• They are attached to thousands of pieces of garbage.
• They send electronic signals to a central computer server.
• They tell scientists where the trash is and what effect
it has on its location.
• They can be viewed by the public.
Another use of these trash tags is to increase public awareness of where
trash goes, which can result in reducing waste. Scientists have already used these 
tags in Seattle and New York. Members of those communities were able to go to 
the Seattle Public Library and to an exhibit in New York to view the trash’s journey. 
Trash tags are just one way to help encourage more people to recycle.
