Administration of the Instruments
Data for this paper, obtained within the context of a larger study, were collected in two phases.
In the first phase, subjects were systematically approached for an on-site exit interview
during the summer of 1998. This interview lasted approximately five minutes and elicited
basic information about visitors’ trip characteristics, group composition, user behavior, and
willingness to pay estimates. To gather more in-depth information about their attitudes
toward MBSA, the fee program, the quality of their experience, and basic demographic
information, visitors were asked to provide their name and address to be sent a follow-up
survey instrument. Sampling typically occurred between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00
p.m. Data for this paper were obtained from the mail-back instruments. Four hundred and
thirty-six names and addresses were collected.
A modified Dillman (1978) approach was used to administer the mail-back survey.
Subjects were mailed an instrument approximately one month after the on-site contact. A
follow-up reminder/thank you card was sent two weeks following the initial mailing, and
a final instrument was sent two weeks following to nonrespondents. This resulted in a final
sample of 269 respondents (61.7% response rate). A factor contributing to this response
rate was the number of international visitors that were sent mail-back instruments (n
=
99).
These visitors were required to pay for their own return postage. Only 18 instruments were
returned from this population.
Measurement of Constructs
All constructs consisted of multiple item indices because, “in the absence of appropriate
empirical evidence, single response measures should not be taken as indicants of attitudes”
(Fishbein & Ajzen, 1975, p. 56). Indices were created by averaging index items. The means,
standard deviations, and reliability coefficients are reported in Table 2.
Attitude toward the MBSA fee program was measured using an index consisting of five
Likert-type items where 1
=
strongly disagree and 5
=
strongly agree. Subjects were asked
to report how they feel about recreation user fees by indicating their level of agreement with
the items. The reliability coefficient for this index was .87.
Place identity and place dependence were also measured using indices consisting
of four and three Likert-type items, respectively, where 1
=
strongly disagree through
5
=
strongly agree. Subjects were asked to indicate the extent to which the items describe
their feelings about the Mono Basin Scenic Area. For place identity the reliability coefficient
was .84 and for place dependence the reliability coefficient was .87.
For the indices measuring Spending Support, subjects were asked to indicate their level
of support for spending fee revenue in various ways. The items for each of the indices were
