After submitting the annotation task, the student can compare his annotations with those 
of his peers or of the instructor. 
At the request of our students, an export function was added to the tool. This function 
enables users to get a printed version of their annotation exercise that they can take to 
class for further discussion and questions. The language instructors have access to the 
print versions of all 
students’ submitted annotations. 
Course integration and evaluation 
The VIDEO.DE application was implemented in different partner institutions of the 
Association KU Leuven. In the following section, we present a use case as an illustration 
of how the tool can be used in a language learning course. Next, we show the results of a 
questionnaire that was conducted with students to assesses the general user-friendliness 
of the tool and the usefulness of the annotation task.
A use case 
The annotation tool was introduced in different courses and at different levels 
(undergraduate and graduate). A first use case was conducted in a group of BA1 
students. After discussing the German case system in regular class, the annotation 
assignment was to apply that knowledge to spoken language. The instructor selected a 
German video that contained a lot of visual support to the language (see also Neuman & 
Koskinen 1992, Sydorenko 2010) and defined four annotation parameters, corresponding 
to the four cases: Nominative, Genitive, Dative and Accusative. Next, the students 
annotated the video at home with the VIDEO.DE tool and submitted their assignments. 
The instructor then checked the annotations of the students and promoted the best 
solution. In the following class, the instructor went through the most notable errors and 
discussed them with the students by displaying them on the screen. Students 
appreciated receiving oral feedback by the instructor as this step helps them to 
consolidate their understanding of the matter.
