Second, the tool enables peer reviewing; the student can view his peers’ annotations 
after submitting his annotation exercise. In this way, the student can notice errors in his 
own output (cf. Chapelle’s hypotheses for multimedia CALL, 1998) and has the 
opportunity to critically evaluate the output of his fellow students.
User identification and authorization 
The frontend of the VIDEO.DE application is linked to a course in Toledo, which is the 
web-based learning and teaching environment of the Association KU Leuven. Thus, 
students access the VIDEO.DE application through Toledo via single sign-on. In this way, 
the output of every annotation task is automatically linked to a student and saved. The 
registration via Toledo also ensures that every user is immediately identified either as 
having the authority to modify, evaluate or create content (generally, this would be the 
teacher) or as being the performer of created tasks (the student). 
Adding and exporting annotations 
In order to annotate the video, the student selects the transcription unit where he wants 
to make an annotation. The application automatically (re)plays that selection of the 
video. Then, the student highlights in the transcript the word (groups) he wishes to 
annotate and refines the time indication on the time line by narrowing the in and out 
point. He adds annotations by clicking on an annotation parameter from the annotation 
scheme, as previously defined by the language instructor. The application provides for 
every activated annotation parameter a separate ‘time line’, which visualizes the 
frequency of that annotation in the video by use of color codes. For the sake of clarity, 
every annotation parameter in the transcription and on the time line receives a separate 
color.

Finally, the student can choose to save his annotation (so as to be able to continue the 
annotation work later) or to submit it, after which no more adjustments can be made.
