17.16.11 Maintenance – Article 17
Any facilities, equipment and devices provided must be 
subject to a suitable system of maintenance and main-
tained in an effi cient state, in effi cient working order and 
in good repair.
17.16.12 Safety assistance – Article 18
The responsible person must, (except a competent self 
employed person) appoint one or more competent per-
sons to assist them in undertaking the preventive and pro-
tective measures. If more than one person is appointed, 
they must make arrangements for ensuring adequate 
co-operation between them.

The number of persons appointed, the time avail 
-
able for them to fulfi l their functions and the means at 
their disposal must be adequate having regard to the 
size of the premises, the risks to which relevant persons 
are exposed and the distribution of those risks through-
out the premises.
17.16.13
Provision of information to employees 
and others – Article 19 and 20
The responsible person must provide their employees 
with comprehensible and relevant information on:

the risks to them identifi ed by the risk assessment
➤
the preventive and protective measures
➤
the procedures for fi re drills
➤
the identities of persons nominated for fi re fi ghting 
or fi re drills
➤
the risks notifi ed to them regarding shared premises.
Before employing a child, a parent (or guardian) of the 
child must be provided with comprehensible and rele-
vant information on the risks to that child identifi ed by 
the risk assessment; the preventive and protective meas-
ures; and the risks notifi ed to them regarding shared 
premises.
Where a dangerous substance is present in or on 
the premises, additional information must be provided 
for employees as follows:
(a) the details of any such substance including:
(i) the name of the substance and the risk which it 
presents
(ii) access to any relevant safety data sheet, and
(iii) 
legislative provisions which apply to the 
substance.
(b) the 
signifi cant fi ndings of the risk assessment.
The responsible person must ensure that the employer 
of any employees from an outside undertaking who are 
working in or on the premises is provided with compre-
hensible and relevant information on:
(a) the risks to those employees, and
(b) the preventive and protective measures taken by the 
responsible person.
The responsible person must ensure that any person 
working in their undertaking who is not their employee is 
provided with appropriate instructions and comprehen-
sible and relevant information regarding any risks to that 
person.
