Ask yourself the following questions:

“Must this be addressed right now?” “Is this a temporary problem that will resolve itself 
soon?” Example: Two employees arguing over workspace when the entire group will be 
moving in a week.
o
“Can I schedule the ‘fire’ issue to get done so it becomes part of my plan and an important 
to-do item?”
o
“Am I the only one who can handle this? If not, to whom can I delegate?”
o
“How can we handle or plan for this so it doesn’t become a recurring crisis?”

Recognize the difference between someone else’s urgent issue and a true crisis.
•
Every day, review your to-do list and work on your highest priority items.

An employee comes to you with a problem he/she is unsure how to handle. What is your 
response?
1. “I’m really busy right now. Figure it out yourself.”
2. “I’ll take care of it.”
3. “Here’s what you should do to handle it.”
4. “What do you think would be a good first step?”
The best response would be statement four. You were probably a good problem solver in your 
previous position, but now you need to allow your employees to solve their problems as much as 
possible—that’s why the fourth option is the best choice. Obviously, they will come to you when 
they need help; however, your goal should be to guide them more than tell them what to do or 
do it for them.
