high infection rate remained until recently. In 2005, the Center for Disease Control, Korea started treatment for the infected
people in endemic areas along major rivers. In Korea, there is a variety of intestinal parasites (for example, Metagonimus
yokogawai) that are prevalent next to Clonorchis sinensis. Vivax malaria was believed to have been almost eliminated in South
Korea in the early 1980s, but since 1993 it has become a re-emerging infectious disease. Currently, there are between 500 and
1,000 cases a year in the army and civilian population, bordering the demilitarized zone. The reservoir is believed to be the
north of the demilitarized zone, and spread by mosquitoes from the north. In addition, anisakiasis, trichinellosis, sparganosis,
taeniasis, cysticercosis, giardiasis and amebiasis etc. have been reported. In recent years, imported parasitic infections have
been reported occasionally, and Uzbekistan echinococcosis is one of them. Since the late 1990s, the Korean government's
ODA projects were launched, including NTD controls in Southeast Asia, Africa and Central Asia. Conclusions. Although the
importance of parasitic infections in Korea decreased nowadays, some of the remaining parasitic infections need to be con-
trolled. It is necessary to watch parasitic/infectious diseases from outside the country and to participate in global parasite/infec-
tious disease control activities using past parasite control experience in Korea.

Objective. Echinococcosis occurs mainly in industrial areas based on stock-farming such as Central Asia, America,
and Australia. Echinococcus sp. infection causes echinococcosis in intermediate hosts such as sheep, cattle, goats, camels,
and horses. There are many cases of echinococcosis in Uzbekistan that the stock-farming is a primary industry. Although the
epidemiological and genetic studies on Echinococcus sp. are very important in terms of public health and economics, there is
no study on genotyping of Echinococcus sp. in Uzbekistan. Materials and Methods. In this study, the isolated parasites from
patients (52 hydatid cysts), jackal (1 adult worm), sheep (6 hydatid cysts), and dog (1 adult worm) in Uzbekistan were analyzed
by sequencing of mitochondrial DNA (cox1 and nad1). Results. The G1 (G1-G3) types was dominant in human cases in Uz-
bekistan. One isolate was identified as G4 type from human samples, which was first human case. We also found only G1 type
was identified from isolates of jackal, sheep, and dog. The genotypes among G1-G3 were not significantly different between
each type, and the genotypes according to infected organs were also not significantly different. Conclusion. As a result, those
genotypes were also G1 (G1-G3) types as that of humans, suggesting that jackal, sheep, and dog may be involved in the
infection route of human case in Uzbekistan. The first identification of genotypes of Echinococcus sp. in Uzbekistan will help
perform the genetic analysis and epidemiological studies of Echinococcus sp. in Uzbekistan.
