There are only two easy guidelines to follow when it comes to 
word stress: 
There is just one type of stress in a single word. (There can't be 
two stresses in the same word.) You hear two words if you hear two 
stresses. Two stresses cannot be expressed in a single word. It's true 
that some words might have a "secondary" emphasis. Secondary 
stress, on the other hand, is significantly less than primary stress and is 
only employed in long words.) 
Only vowels, not consonants, can be stressed. 
Here are some more complicated principles to help you figure out 
where to put your stress. However, don't put too much faith in them 
because there are many exceptions. It's preferable to try to "feel" the 
language's music and apply the tension spontaneously.
