Teachers and students of the great Imam
Looking at Kaffal ash-Shashi’s teachers, we can also know his
knowledge and the sciences he studied. Mufti Ziyovuddinkhan ibn Eshan
Babakhan (rahmatullohi alayh - may Allah have mercy on him) said that
the scholar received his first knowledge from Haysam ibn Kulayb Shashi,
a famous muhaddith and jurist (fakih) of his time. Haysam ibn Kulayb was
one of the greatest scholars of Shash at that time. Later, Imam Shashi
became a student of another famous imam, Abul Abbas Ahmad ibn Umar
ibn as-Surayji (850-918). He learned the secrets of jurisprudence (fikh)
from both teachers.
According to sources, Kaffal al-Shashi’s teacher of law and history
was the famous scholar at-Tabari (839-923 AD, 224-310 AH). It is known
that Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jarir at-Tabari was the greatest historian of

the Muslim East and the author of many volumes. He was also a jurist
(fakih), commentator of Koran and linguist. There are many commentaries
on the Koran, the most famous of which is “the Jami’ ul-bayan fi tafsir al-
Qur’an”, known as the “Tafsiri Tabari” by the great historian Muhammad
ibn Jarir at-Tabari”13. This commentary of Koran is written in 30 volumes.
Tabari is the founder of one of the seven schools of Sunni jurisprudence
(Tabari’s school of law, mazhab).
The second great teacher of Kaffal ash-Shashi was Abul-Hasan Ali
ibn Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (873-941 AD). He was the founder of the
theological movement in the East and wrote many works in this field. Al-
Ash’ari is consider ed to be the founder of the Ash’ari school of thought
(mazhab of aqida), which is well known in Islamic philosophy. The
scholars of the Ash’ari school of thought have done a great service in
correcting the beliefs of the Muslims. According to Tajiddin Abu Nasr
Abdulvahhab as-Subki (was born in 1327), one of the scholars of Usul ul-
Fikh, the author of the book “Al-Ashbah van-Nazair”, which contains
various disciplines of jurisprudence, “He studied theology from al-Ash’ari,
and al-Ash’ari studied jurisprudence from him”. Undoubtedly, this
information gives us reason to conclude that the scholar, despite his young
age, quickly mastered Islamic jurisprudence and even reached the level
where he could teach jurisprudence to his teachers. Undoubtedly, this is an
example for all of us. It should be noted that Abul-Hasan Ali ibn Abu Musa
al-Ash’ari acknowledged the knowledge, intellect, and achievements of the
young Qaffal Shashi in the field of jurisprudence, and learned
jurisprudence from him, despite the fact that he was a teacher. This is proof
that he was a truly great teacher.
According to the information available to us, the fakih also taught in
several madrassas in the Islamic world. That is why he has so many
disciples.
According to sources, a scholar from Baghdad named Khoja
Muhammad Nomi was educated by Kaffal ash-Shashi and became close
friends with him. He came to Tashkent with his family following ash-
Shashi, where he remained for the rest of his life. The tomb of Muhammad
13 A.Sh.Jo‘zjoniy. “Islom huquqshunosligi, Hanafiy mazhabi va O ‘rta Osiyo faqihlari”. - Toshkent, “TIU” nashriyoti,
2002. - 89-bet.

Nomi is in the mausoleum of the scholar. Kaffal ash-Shashi died in 976 AD
(364-365 on Hegira) in Tashkent and was buried there.
The great imam always told his disciples, “Separation is a torment” .
The truth of Shashi’s opinion is still true today. Some sects and groups,
under the guise of our sacred religion and seek to carry out their nefarious
and hateful intentions on the basis of false “teachings”, are choosing the
path of sectarianism. In so doing, they are throwing the world community,
including the Muslim Ummah, into a whirlpool of suffering. In the
following hadiths from the scholar’s “The Collection of short hadiths” have
always been quoted by Imam Shashi for the students of the madrasah:
Actions depend on intentions.
The giver advice (adviser) is the depositor.
Be generous godly.
The Koran is a cure for pain.
Dua is worship.
Good question is half science.
Being with society is auspicious.
