History of Qalajik Castle 
The monument is located in Bagat district of Khorezm region. It is 21 km west of 
the district center. The area is 5 hectares and dates back to the IV century BC. A 
small part of this fortress, which has flourished and fallen into ruin several times in 
its history, has survived to the present day. In fact, the castle was divided into two 
parts, the Big and the Small Castle. A large castle has been preserved. The smallest 
is located 1.5 km northeast of the largest, 10 km southwest of Bagat district, on the 
border of Karakum. Its total area was 2 hectars. In 1980, in the process of developing 
new lands, he joined the arable land. 
We find the Qalajik castle in many historical sources. It is mentioned in the 
sources under several names. For example, in the works of the 10th century Maqdisi, 
Istakhri and Hudud-ul-Alam, written by an unknown author, it was mentioned as 
“Kardarankhos”, which is located between Khiva and Khazarasp. According to the 
authors, there were 3 farsakhs from Khazarasp to Kardarankhos and 5 farsakhs from 
there to Khiva. According to Maqdisi, it was not a city but a fortress with gates and 
ditches.

In Abulgazi, Qalajik was mentioned as "Carden Hayot" (Carden life)

According to Ya. Gulyamov, Munis and Agahi

described Kardarankhos in 
their work as follows: “Kardan Lake of Life, now known as Lake Nukuz, is located 
in Besharik”. Of course, the author says that it corresponds to the area where the 
ruins of Qalajiq, i.e. Kardaronkhos, are recorded. The appearance of the walls of the 
fortress of Qalajiq, which are preserved to this day, is in the form of an incorrect 
rectangle, and the fortress stretches from east to west. The length of the northern 
wall is 154 m., the western wall is 65 m. In the middle of the east wall. the location 
of the high 6-7 m hill has been preserved, where there was a gate. This once 
prosperous fortress was vacated in the I-II centuries AD, and the population left the 
place.
