«FACTORS OF IDENTIFYING THE STATUS OF THE
ENGLISH LANGUAGE AS A LINGUA FRANCA IN INTERNATIONAL
COMMUNICATION»
Abstract
The article discusses the main criteria for determining the status of English as a
lingua franca (ALF) in the global continuum of English (GL). An understanding of ALF
as a set of sociolects functioning in socially limited discursive communities is
proposed, three factors that distinguish ALF from national and territorial variants of
AL are substantiated: inclusiveness, which is the practice of free inclusion of ALF in
the communicative process, functional complementarity of ALF in relation to to the
national languages of users and use in the discursive community.Key words: as a
global/international language, the grammatical standards, lexical standards , phonetic
standards, the method of curriculum.
Key words: English as a lingua franca, international communication, sociolect,
identification criteria.
Over the past decades, the globalization of the English language (GL) has
become one of the main themes of sociolinguistic studies of multilingualism, which
correspond to radical changes in the socio-economicand social and political life of the
modern world. The study of general patterns and specific manifestations of the
interaction between the prevailing to the middle. 20th century British version, which
became widespread in the 2nd half of the 20th century. the American version and the
new versions of AL required the consideration of regional and national features of the
328
multinational AP in different regions of the globe.Deep insight into the essence of the
current language situation led the American linguist B.
Kachru to create the concept of World Englishes , according to which the EL of
people who are not native speakers andbelonging to different linguistic and cultural
communities, is no longer phonetically, grammatically and lexically standardized by
the English language of Great Britain or the USA, but, together with the latter, is a
certain set of "English languages of the world".
In accordance with the concept of B. Kachru, English speakers are divided into
those for whom 1) he is native and used in almost all functions; 2) AE is not native, but
acts as institutional second language; and 3) EL is not native, but acts as a foreign
one, and the set of situations in which it is used is limited . Norm-supporting or endo-
normative options, functioning in English-speaking countries, traditionally dictate the
standards and rules that are guided by native English speakers.
At the same time, if
British norms are traditionally considered exemplary, and American norms constitute
their alternative, then, for example, Australian or New Zealand norms receive
recognition only within their regions.
Norm-developing variants of the second group in such countries as, for example,
India, Malaysia, Nigeria,Singapore are characterized by a situation of conflict
between linguistic norms and linguistic behavior. They are distinguished by the
confrontation between endonormative and exonormative tendencies. Norm-dependent
variants of the third groups, for example, in Egypt, Indonesia, Russia, Japan, are
predominantly exonormative .
The works of B. Kachru and his followers not only
opened the period of study of new national and territorial variants in the global
continuum of AL, but also marked the beginning of its description as a universal
language of interethnic and intercultural communication. Among the most topical
areas of these studies, an important role belongs to the study of the status and
functioning of the English language as a lingua franca (ALF) processes of linguistic
globalization.
