Commensurate with this reality, we have provision to combine several IPSO Objects to form 
composite IPSO Objects.

For example, let’s consider a typical HVAC Controller. In its simplest form, it needs 
sensing and actuation. Actuation object can further be broken down to the resources “On” and 
“Off”. Thus, the composite IPSO Object for HVAC controller should look like one shown in 
Figure 2.3.2.
Also, composite objects for Energy Meter and Fridge have been shown in Figure 2.3.2. 
Note the multiple instances of “Actuation” object in the Energy Meter Module. In this way, just 
with the IPSO Models, it is possible to construct the representation of real-life IoT application.

Role of IPSO in the Thesis 
Revisiting the protocol stack in Figure 2.1, IPSO can be seen as the top layer in the 
stack. LWM2M protocol is based on object model similar to IPSO. IPSO object model is based 
on the object model of LWM2M protocol for device management. Thus, IPSO Objects can 
interoperate on top of different transport protocols like CoAP, HTTP, MQTT. In the case of 
this thesis, IPSO Objects are accessed by RESTful-like interface on top of CoAP. 
As a part of the thesis, I plan to work on automating a ‘Code Converter’ which can 
convert the IPSO Object logic to a C/C++ code which can be seamlessly integrated with ported 
Wakaama libraries on the IoT Device such as Arduino or SODAQ SARA.
