Smart Agriculture 
Wireless sensor networks can be deployed in the agricultural land to record and transmit 
the parameters such as soil moisture, humidity, temperature, light intensity etc. to be of 
analytical value. NB-IoT can come handy as a cheap, low-power and massively scalable option 
to carry the data over to the servers for further analysis.

Logistics Tracking 
The logistic businesses have to reliably know the location of the transport vehicles in 
their fleet. The fleet of vehicles often have to travel through challenging geographic terrains 
with poor network conditions. NB-IoT is an ideal option to reliably transmit the co-ordinates 
of vehicles to the company servers in such network constraints. 
Other applications where NB-IoT’s features can be justifiably used are Wearable Sensor 
Networks, Smart Homes, Industry 4.0, Smart Garbage Bins etc.

Role of NB-IoT in the Thesis 
As seen in the protocol stack in Figure 2.1, NB-IoT is at the bottom of the stack. The 
tightly bound stack of the protocol is supposed to operate over limited bandwidth of NB-IoT 
network, for this thesis, which has been a challenge itself.
For this thesis, two scenarios of NB-IoT implementation have been analysed: 
microcontroller without on-board modem and microcontroller with on-board modem. The NB-
IoT modems require an NB-IoT SIM card. The communication over NB-IoT is initialized and 
carried on by asking the microcontroller to send the AT Commands to the NB-IoT modem. 
Hence, a robust integration of AT Commands driver must also be ensured for seamless 
operation over NB-IoT. 
Besides, DTLS is an important feature to ensure LWM2M device management over an 
encrypted connection. Hence, establishing secure DTLS-encrypted link between LWM2M 
client and server is also imperative.
