As with Physical Sky renderings, do not use Auto Exposure. You will need to set the expo-
sure manually (Fig. 29.16).
Candela Strength and exposure
You’ll need to perform a balancing act with the values between Candela and Exposure. Each 
light type will have a set Candela value; however, even with high Candela values, your scenes 
might render dark. Therefore, the approach outlined here provides baseline Candela values for 
lights in tandem with a range of exposures.
Setting a baseline for all of the lighting allows the exposure to be adjusted in a way that 
takes into account all of the light types. This allows you to have a combination of lighting 
types, each using a baseline value while the exposure can be quickly adjusted for best result. 
Although your final goal might be to represent lighting in a scene as accurately to real-world 
conditions as possible, the method used here provides settings to create clear renderings.
point Lights
For point lights, use the base setting of 125 Candelas. Candela can be increased in increments 
ranging upward as needed to allow brighter emitters. The baseline works well when Exposure 
is set between +3 and +7 (Fig. 29.17, Fig. 29.18, Fig. 29.19, Fig. 29.20). Fig. 29.19 and Fig. 29.20 
show how setting a high exposure brings out the desired lighting. Fig. 29.18 and Fig. 29.19 show 
that even with higher exposure settings, the light appears too dark. Part of the reason is that 
more lights are needed. Ceiling lights are added, each with a Candela strength of 200. The 
resulting renderings are assigned Exposure settings of 5 (Fig. 29.21) and 7 (Fig. 29.22).
