Two  Uzbek  astronomers  were  working  on  a  clear  nightin  October  2007  at  Maidanak 

Observatory  when  theysuddenly  pored  over  celestial  images.  After  observingthe  images,  they 

noticed  a  star-like  object  movingalong  the  orbital  path.  They  tracked  the  object  anddecided  to 

send  the  preliminary  (1)___Minor  Planet  Center  (MPC),  which  was  run  by  theSmithsonian 

Astrophysical Observatory and HarvardCollege Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts.They 

received the confirmation  about  the object  notbeing previously documented in  MPC catalogue. 

TheCenter  assigned  the  object  a  provisional  designation,and  the  real  work  began.  It  took 

Bahodir Hafizov, theUzbek astronomer at Maidanak, almost two yearsto plot the daily trajectory 

and define the precisecoordinates of the object until the Center was satisfiedthat it was indeed a 

new  minor  planet,  or  smallsolar  system  body.  The  planet  was  enrolled  in  MPCcatalogue  and 

named Samarkand, after the city thatwas (2)______________in.Maidanak Observatory works in 

(3)__and other international  institutions.  The new smallsolar system  body was  discovered with 

the  help  of  themost  modern  and  highly-sensitive  equipment  that  is  thebest  in  the  region  and 

given  to  Ulugbek  AstronomicalInstitute  by  the  association  of  Korean  Universities.During  the 

Soviet period Maidanak was a militarysatellite ranging station and it was impossible to carryout 

this kind of International Cooperation in the fieldof astronomy. 

Nowadays  Ulugbek  Astronomical  Institute  (UBAI)  istaking  an  active  part  in  an 

International  projects  like(4)______________,  monitoring  of  the  brightnessof  quasars, 

observing  young  stars  outside  our  solarsystem  and  many  others.  That’s  because  the 

Maidanakobservatory  has  (5)______________and  experiencedscientists  as  well.Obviously, 

UBAI  is  doing  more  than  just  discoveringnew  minor  planets.  Thanks  to  the  hard  work  of  a 

groupof  scholars  and  (6)____________  of  astronomers,Maidanak  has  turned  into  a  world-class 

observatorythat helps to solve some of the universe’s mostcomplex puzzles.
