INTRODUCTION:
In recent years, educators and researchers have been
looking for new and innovative ways of instructing students. There have been many
schools of thought regarding how best to teach and many different tools foteacherser
to use. However, one new tool that has taken some time to take root has been the game
as a means of teaching. This is partly because, for years, games were associated with
entertainment and wasted time. Over the past few years though, there has been a steady
growth in the use of game-based learning, which has led to a new and effective means
of teaching in the classroom. According to the education group, the Educause game is
becoming much more popular now that people are more familiar with technology and
familiar with how games can be used in the classroom. Today, game-based learning is
occurring at the highest levels of education, including universities and schools of
business. Writing for the Association for Talent Development, noted that educational
games are becoming increasingly popular as well. The association indicated that there
were ten types of education-oriented games that were being popularized and that their
use was increasing. Ellis pointed out that resistance to learning was declining in

academia, particularly as new research indicated that game-based learning was
effective at improving academic outcomes.
1 Game has been used as a learning tool for centuries. Chess was used to teach
strategic thinking as far back as the Middle Ages, and the game of Kreigsspiel was
invented in 1812 specifically to teach Prussian officers strategy. Beyond military
strategy, the genesis of Kindergarten in the mid-1800s was Friedrich Fröbel’s ideas of
learning through play. The core concept behind game-based learning is teaching
through repetition. Failure, and the accomplishment of goals. Video games are built on
this principle. The player starts slow and gains in skill until they’re able to skillfully
navigate the most difficult levels. Games that are planned and designed well will offer
enough difficulty to keep it challenging while still being easy enough for the player to
win.
2 Game-based learning takes this same concept and applies it to teaching a
curriculum. Students work toward a goal, choosing actions and experiencing the
consequences of those actions. They actively learn and practice the right way to do
things. The result is active learning instead of passive learning.Flight simulators are a
perfect example of the effectiveness of game-based learning. Pilots commonly use
flight simulators during their training. They’re given very specific goals and practice
until they can accomplish them. The result is much more effective than sitting through
lectures and theory.
3 Pleasure from Learning English Various kinds of language teaching games can
be employed to make a lively and enlightening classroom. Games can make learning
interesting and exciting, arouse the learning enthusiasm and offer opportunities for
academic success. Games can make English classes more interesting and easier, so
English learning will become a pleasure and the English classroom will become a
pleasant place. Confucius holds that happy learning not only makes one delight in
learning but also never makes one sick of learning. Meeting Children’s Needs During
students’ growing, they have some needs. The and self-fulfillment more often, and can
guide students to study voluntarily, and can arouse students’ development.

4 Advantages of Games Language learning is hard work. Games can help and
encourage many learners to sustain their interests. They play an important role in
language teaching. Here are many valid reasons for using games in language These
reasons provide insights into the advantages of games in language well as activating
language production and advocating physical movement. Game-based teaching has
had numerous advocates. John Locke claimed games were integral to schooling since
they provide ann d active and positive learning experience. George Herbert Mead, a
colleague of Dewey’s, acknowledged their importance for the healthy socialization of
children. Through games, children Advances in Social Science, Education and
Humanities Research, volume 151 596 learned to imitate and assumed diverse social
roles. Certainly, Jean Piaget stressed the importance of game-playing in cognitive
development. Games are fun and children like to play games. The game context makes
the foreign language useful to the children. It brings the target language to life. Through
playing games, students can learn English is the way children learn their mother tongue
without realizing they are positive. Types of Games Classifying games can be difficult,
because categories often overlap. Hadfield explains two ways of classifying games.
CONCLUSION: First, he divides language games into two types: linguistic
games and communicative games. Linguistic games focus on accuracy, such as
supplying the correct antonym. Besides, communicative games focus the on successful
exchange of information and ideas, such as two people identifying the differences
between their two pictures which are similar to one another but not exactly alike.
Correct language usage, though still important, is secondary to achieving the
communicative goal. Besides, there are plenty of ways to practice listening, speaking,
reading, and writing with games. To make students take part in playing games, it is
very important to enrich the variety of games, even the most interesting game will not
be interesting when it is played frequently
