COMPREHENSION IN ESL AND EFL CLASSROOMS» 
Annotations.
The article aims to clarify the important of listening comprehension and 
using songs to develop learners' listening skills in the ESL and EFL classrooms in 
order to get a perfect acquisitions of the second languages. 
Key words: 
listening comprehension, language, techniques of developing listening 
skills. 
Introduction. 
In our everyday life, language is an important aspect of communication. To learn 
a language, learners require to study all the four skills to prove themselves as good 
communicators. These four skills are divided into two categories, which are receptive 
and productive skills: listening and reading are receptive skills, speaking and writing 
abilities are productive skills. Listening is a skill a sense that it's a related but distinct 
process than hearing which involves merely perceiving sound in a passive way while 
listening accupies an active and immediate analysis of the streams of sound. Rivers 
said : "Speaking does not of itself constitute communication unless what is said is 
comprehend by another person..... Teaching the comprehension of spoken speech is 
therefore of primary importance if the communication aim is to be reached 
"(1966.pp196,204)
Despite the fact that the attention to the listening skill in second and foreign language
development is becoming an important topic of study in both theory and pedagogy
.
For this reason, we have to take into account some 
essential
factors
of listening and 
language learning and also to develop listening comprehension activities and

materials. In classrooms, teachers expect students to listening attentively to whatever 
they are saying. Students are asked to play back whatever they have understood or 
remembered. This practice in traditional classrooms hampers the listening ability of 
the students. The teacher can easily overcome this difficulty by telling in advance ' 
what to expect' and what to listen to' . This will help to improve the listening
comprehension. In classrooms, teachers expect children to listen attentively to 
whatever they are saying. Children are asked to play back whatever they have 
understood or remembered. This practice in traditional classrooms hampers the 
listening ability of the children The teacher can easily overcome this difficulty by 
telling in advance ' what to expect' and ' what to listen to' . This will help the children 
to improve listening comprehension. 
On the other hand, there are some methods to develop the children' listening skills. 
For example, many teachers should utilize course books with audio CDs, radio, 
podcasts, audio books,films, songs, special educational sites, communication were 
increased efficacy of the listening skills. In order to do this , it is necessary to create 
an atmosphere that resembles the one which is natural to children. One of the best ways 
to create such a natural, anxiety-free environment is through interesting activities. 
Songs certainly belong to groups of fun activities. Songs are one of type of listening 
activities that have a broad potential. Musics and songs are essential parts of growing 
and learning. Children love to sing and teachers naturally use songs to teach them 
concepts and language in a fun way. Some of the significant characteristics of songs 
are that they are fun and can keep the childrens excited. However, the most important 
feature of songs is repetition. They contain language. Even if the teachers play songs 
multiple times a day, the majority of childrens probably wouldn't get bored. In addition, 
songs are very beneficial types of activities. There are so many aspects of a language 
that can be delivered and recycled through the use of songs. They can be used at any 
stage of a lesson and there are many ways to incorporate them into a lesson. Sometimes, 
they are used just as gap fillers and warm-ups, sometimes as the main part of a lesson. 
But sometimes they are there to provide a fun atmosphere. Moreover, not only in music

education, but also in rhythmic musical education as well as in integrative pedagogy 
and special education, songs that inspire movement, dance, role-play, language and 
emotional expression represent an important part of the curriculum. In music therapy 
for children the systematic use of songs is one of the essential tools that therapists have 
at their disposal. 
Moreover, the songs play the main role in the ESL and EFL classrooms.. The right 
song can affect moods, strengthen students' consideration, and has a huge impact on 
the emotions them feel . Songs is also an immensely powerful tool for bringing children 
together in a collective love and appreciation for a specific song. And let's not forget 
about getting together with friends for hilarious karaoke sessions. As a matter of fact 
we can often watch children leaving the foreign classroom and singing the song they 
learnt at the lesson songs are easily learned if they immediately catch the learner's 
interest . If well tought they are seldom forgotten. Not all language material is so easily 
retained and evoked. In addition, songs are very motivating. Popular musics in its many 
forms constitutes a powerful structure with its methodology, rituals and lyrics. As such 
it is a part of children's lives which moves and motivates them to master the language.
" Music is pretty memorable, whether this is because its repetitive pattering reinforces 
learning without loss of motivation- whatever the reason, songs, and music stick in the 
head. " The song stuck in my head" phenomenon ( the echoing in our minds of the last 
song we heard) seems to rein force the ideal that song works in our short or long-term 
memory" ( Murphy, 1994).
