Repeating Yourself
Definition:
Thinking you are right, you repeat your point of view—often
louder—rather than try to understand the other person’s point of view.
How this might look in a conversation:
“I’d like to go home now.”
“I just want to stay for a few more minutes.”
“I really don’t want to stay here any longer.”
“Honest, I just want to stick around a bit more!”
Here, both partners are doing the same thing—quite possibly
unconsciously mirroring each other’s behaviour, and both are probably
now feeling that they have not been heard. This repetition is the most
common sign of defensiveness within families and couples.
This sign goes in the same category as nagging, saying things
“differently”, and “reminding” the other person.
