GUEST CHARGES, PAYMENT, AND CHECK-OUT The potential for check fraud occurs when a hotel accepts personal checks.
Although it may be impossible to prevent all check fraud, Figure 12 lists actions
to minimize the acceptance of a worthless check. In many cases of check fraud, the
criminal has committed identity theft and is forging a check using the victim’s ID.
Modern prevention of check fraud usually focuses on techniques to reduce the
criminal’s ability to falsify or provide the victim’s personal information, including
Social Security or driver’s license numbers. Although such fraud is difficult to
detect, use of a check verification service or check guarantee service can help
protect a hotel.
