general and its segments more specifically.
Section Summary: Figure 10 lists challenges confronting the lodging industry,
and Figure 11 notes challenges confronting specific segments of the industry.
Lodging industry challenges include those relating to operating concerns such as
labor shortages and increased competition, marketing concerns such as market
segmentation and overlapping brands, technological concerns such as third-party
wholesalers, and economic issues such as globalization and terrorism and safety.
Segment-specific challenges are numerous for each segment, but two concerns
affect all segments: increased costs and marketing issues related to competition
and guest expectations or confusion about the crowded marketplace.
