SETTING THE STAGE FOR ASSESSMENT
The general principles of assessment outlined
apply to children of any age. However, it is partic-
ularly important to bear in mind that the range of
psychiatric disorders seen may differ according to
the child’s age and developmental stage.
The assessment of a child and adolescent usually
will take place over several meetings, using infor-
mation from several different sources. An initial
assessment interview is a key time to begin the
therapeutic process of engagement with a family
and it is important to try to get it right. It is also
a key part of any assessment of factors that may
pose a risk to the child’s safety or well-being.
Consideration should be given as to whom to
see. With a younger child, it is usually helpful to
