Matrices

are a useful tool for displaying paired connections.

For example, in collaborative filtering systems, the matrix's rows may represent people and the

columns may represent goods. Only in a few circumstances will we have information about a

specific (user, product) combination, such as a user's rating of a product.

When we simply have similarity information between observations, as implemented by a

semi-empirical distance measure, we have an analogous scenario. Some bioinformatics homology

searches, like variations of BLAST, merely yield a similarity score, which may or may not fulfill the

requirements of a metric.

Images

may be conceived of as matrices, which are two-dimensional arrays of integers. However,

because they have spatial coherence (lines, forms) and a multiresolution structure (real pictures),

this representation is exceedingly poor. That is, downsampling a picture produces an object with

statistics that are quite comparable to the original image. A slew of techniques based on computer

vision and psychooptics have been developed to describe these occurrences.

Video

gives visuals a temporal dimension. They might be represented as a three-dimensional

array once more. Good algorithms, on the other hand, consider the visual sequence's temporal

coherence.
