A practical Handbook for the Actor

THE REHEARSAL PROCESS
Rehearsal should be a place where the actor can experiment with
di erent actions for a scene. You don’t have to come up with the
perfect  analysis  for  the  rst  rehearsal,  but  you  should  come
prepared  with  a  workable  analysis.  Explore  di erent  actions  for
the scene, and explore di erent tools for the action. Eventually you
will have to decide on the best action for the scene, and then your
job will become to make that action habitual. Gradually you will
be  able  to  concentrate  less  and  less  on  the  verbal,  intellectual
process of deciding on the best action, and more and more on the
intuitive  process  of  working  moment  to  moment  o   the  other
actors. Once an action has become habitual, it will simply operate
without  your  concentrating  on  it.  You  can  then  pay  attention  to
what  is  happening  in  the  moment  with  the  knowledge  that  your
action will guide you.
