If  you  are  playing  a  part  requiring  you  to  speak  with  a  German
accent, you analyze the script for action and you learn the accent

separately. Using a good dialect tape, practice it until it becomes
second nature to you. The same goes for vocal quality: if you are
playing Othello and the director tells you to be more commanding
by working in the lower register of your voice, you must practice
until you are able to use that part of your voice automatically.
In  the  same  way,  a  physical  alteration  of  your  body  must  be
worked  on  until  it  is  habitual.  If,  for  example,  you  are  playing
Laura Wing eld in Williams’ The Glass Menagerie,  once  you  have
analyzed  the  script  for  action,  you  then  decide  on  the  speci c
changes you must make in your movement in order to convey that
Laura  is  crippled.  Perhaps  wearing  a  heavy  leg  brace  will  cause
you to walk in a way that evinces her handicap. Or you may have
to add certain speci c movements. When working with externals,
remember that less is more. In other words, ful ll the requirements
of  the  script,  but  don’t  become  bogged  down  with  physical
externals  to  the  point  that  you  distract  yourself  or  the  audience.
Audiences are intelligent and highly suggestible; theatregoers come
to  the  theatre  to  immerse  themselves  in  illusion.  The  more
attention you call to any theatrical arti ce, the less the audience
will  accept  it,  because  you  are  calling  attention  to  the  arti cial
nature of the theatre as a whole.
