Preparing for a Scene
By correctly analyzing your script, you’ve already done most of the
preparatory work for any scene. What remains is to get ready in
the  moments  preceding  an  actual  rehearsal  or  performance.  You
don’t  want  to  spend  any  time  warming  up  onstage;  you  should
arrive ready to jump into the scene from the very  rst moment.
The simplest and most e ective way to prepare to do a scene is
to go over your analysis. Start with the as-if. Silently talk out what
you would say and do in your imaginary situation in order to do
your action. Then right before you enter or before the lights come
up, state your action to yourself: “I’m going to _____.”
A  situation  that  deserves  special  attention  is  when  a  character
enters a scene and is confronted by a surprising or arresting set of
circumstances. (If you keep in mind that you don’t have to actually
experience surprise in order to convince the audience that you’ve
come  upon  something  unexpected,  then  the  following  technical
solutions will be that much easier to employ.) What you must do is
nd  something  to  draw  your  attention  from  the  imaginary
circumstances and your knowledge of what you are going to  nd
onstage,  since  you  can’t  disavow  that  knowledge.  So  construct  a
preliminary action for yourself. This is a complete action, arrived at
through the analysis process, that creates in you a false expectation

of what you will actually confront onstage. For example, you are
in a scene in which the character you are playing enters and  nds
his  wife  lying  dead  in  a  pool  of  blood.  Rather  than  guring  out
how to act surprised, analyze the scene:
1. What is the character literally doing? Coming home to his wife.
2. What is the essential action of what the character is doing in this
scene? Planning to make a loved one feel like a million bucks.
3.  What  is  that  action  like  to  me?  It’s  as  if  I’m  going  to  see  my
grandfather to take him out on the town for his seventy- fth
birthday.
To prepare for your entrance, talk over your as-if as you would
for  any  scene  and  then  state  your  action.  The  above  action  is  a
good one because it is so far from what you will actually encounter
onstage.  The  audience  will  perceive  that  you  have  unknowingly
stumbled  onto  something  unexpected  if  you  clearly  make  the  beat
change onstage; it will read to the audience as the character trying
to  gure out what to do.
Preliminary actions are also e ective if you are waiting onstage
for someone and he either enters in an unexpected manner, does
not  enter  at  all,  or  someone  else  enters  instead.  The  same
principles apply: give yourself something more fun and compelling
to do than worrying about what is about to happen. Theoretically,
you should be able to do this action regardless of whether the other
actor ever does make his entrance (something we pray you never
have to endure).
LINES
The  best  advice  we  can  give  you  about  the  lines  you  will  be
speaking  is  to  learn  them  by  rote  so  that  you  don’t  have  to
concentrate on them while you are playing. We’ve found drilling
the  lines  while  jogging  or  exercising  to  be  e ective  because  it
relieves some of the tedium.

Memorize  the  lines  without  in ection  and  you  will  avoid  the
habit  of  line  readings—that  is,  of  repeating  lines  in  the  same
predetermined manner regardless of what is going on in the scene.
