4.8 Physical office layout
Literature states that ICT-enabled NWW changes organizational structure and culture, which
in turn requires a different physical setting of workplaces to optimally support employees. Employees
increasingly work outside of the office, having a devastating effect on traditional occupancy rates. As
a result, the office workplace focuses more on social interaction, with room for knowledge sharing,
meetings, and social encounters rather than on individual workplaces. Therefore, literature claims
that a shift is noticeable from territorial fixed cell offices to non-territorial flexible open space plan
offices.
Most respondents have reported that the physical office layout requires a change due to
NWW implementation within the business environment. Organizations need to find out what work
activities are being performed by their employees, and which physical layout with a variety of activity
based workplaces will optimally facilitate these activities. Furthermore, workplaces will become
more open and transparent, with a focus on meetings, collaborations, and knowledge sharing.
Regarding the academic office environment most respondents have claimed that the physical
office layout will also change due to NWW, since it has to fit with the newly formed organizational
structure and culture. There is a stronger focus on shared spaces such as lounges, meeting rooms,
and collaboration areas. Combi-offices centered around an open area or activity based workplaces
seem to fit within the academic environment, provided that the high degree of concentration work
for academics is taken into account in the design. The higher average age of academics and their
above average opinionated nature makes that the culture change proceeds in a slower pace than in
the business environment. Be reminded that academics were labelled as stubborn, implying they will
most likely be resistant to change. Therefore, on the contrary, some respondents claim that the
academic organization will most likely not change due to NWW, leaving the physical office layout
unchanged as well.
There thus seems to be a difference between the business and academic environment.
Respondents all agreed that the physical office layout changes when organizational structure and/or
culture will change. However, not all respondents think that the organizational structure and/or
culture experiences such a change due to NWW, since they already have a NWW-based structure
and/or culture.
