The  bold  dotted  aspects  are  therefore  used  in  the  empirical  part  of  this  study  to  measure  the 
impact of ICT-enabled NWW on organizational structure and culture, and how this affects the use of 
the academic office workplace.  
 
Workplaces  consist  of  a  social,  physical,  and  psychological  work  environment.  An 
organization  needs  to  facilitate  work  processes  on  all  these  three  levels.  NWW  results  in  changing 
organizations.  Workplace  requirements  to  optimally  facilitate  employees  in  their  work  activities 
therefore  change  as well. How  a workplace  needs to look  like  in order to facilitate  NWW is not or 
barely  described in literature, probably  because  every  organization needs a customized workplace. 
The  empirical  part  of  this  study  therefore  needs  to  determine  how  the  academic  organization 
changes due to NWW, and how this affects the academic office workplace.   
 
 
Literature study reveals that the average occupation of academic offices is only around 30%, 
creating huge possibilities for space and thereby cost reduction when implementing NWW. 
Furthermore, work activities within the academic environment do not seem to differ that much from 
those in the business environment. The only difference is the bigger need for concentration rooms 
for academic employees.
