researcher, by helping ensure that participants are not able to complain at a
later date that they were badly treated, unaware of what they were signing
up to, and had their rights infringed.
While you can certainly take advice from your tutor on whether, based
on their experience, they feel your particular project will require ethics
approval, it’s also advisable that you check with your university’s Human
Research Ethics Committee – indeed, many universities require this regard-
less. Most universities today have such a committee and it will have
produced a set of guidelines – online and probably in hard copy as well –
designed to help you determine whether or not your project requires ethics
approval and, if so, how to go about obtaining it. Usually this involves
completing and submitting an application form on which you’ll have
to explain briefly the nature of your research and how it will (or could)
impact on participants. In completing your application you will need to
demonstrate that:
you have or will have obtained permission from the appropriate organ-
isations and/or institutions to gain access to your participants/data;
you will make it clear to participants that their involvement is voluntary,
