The Meaning of Diversity
Diversity
exists in a community of people when its members differ from one another
along one or more important dimensions. In the business world, the term diversity is
generally used to refer to demographic differences among people—differences in gender,
age, ethnicity, and so forth. For instance, the average age of the U.S. workforce is gradu-
ally increasing, and so is the number of women in the labor force. Likewise, the labor
force reflects growing numbers of African Americans, Latinos, and Asians, as well as
more dual-career couples, same-gender couples, single parents, and physically challenged
employees.
