Strength and limitations of this study
The strength and limitations of the current study are determined by several
issues. The e-questionnaire allows to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression
among Secondary and Upper Secondary school students while maintaining the WHO
recommended “social distance” during the COVID-19 pandemic, which otherwise
would be impossible. In this cross-sectional study, the identified factors are regarded
as associated factors, which could either be the causes or the results of depression or
anxiety. Furthermore, due to ethical requirements on anonymity and confidentiality
the contact details of the respondents were not collected. However, the use of
validated screening e-questionnaire was considered as a cost-effective approach to
explore the situation in general, therefore, used in this study. Since the research
methodology could not reach people with medically examined depression and anxiety
symptoms, the provision of the results may not fully reflect the severity of depressive
and anxiety symptoms among students. Another limitation of this study is not using
the tools designed specifically for the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the coronavirus
anxiety scale (CAS). Meanwhile, it would be ideal for conducting a prospective study
on the same group of participants with tools developed especially for the COVID-19

40
pandemic after a certain period to provide a concrete finding and to facilitate the
demand for a focused public health initiative.
Various steps were taken for effective communication with the students and
grievance redressal of the students by the State Govt. A three-tier system was formed
at the school level committee of teachers headed by the Principal, whereas District
level committee worked under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner including
team of DEO, DEEO, Principal DIET of the district and that at the State level online
portal meant to address the grievances of students, parents, teachers etc. The
academic as well as non-academic problems faced by the students were addressed
effectively and regularly. The students can also directly convey their problems,
concerns and provide their feedback through such platforms. Students were given
importance and it was made clear to all authorities that mental Health of students may
not go bad and they should be supported to keep themselves away from all stress, so
the students of classes 1-8 were directly promoted to the next class since their annual
exams could not be conducted.
Students studying in class 9
th
and 11
th
were able to take most of the exam and
their result was declared duly in time. Marking of the answer sheets of class 10th was
done by teachers working from home and the result was declared by taking average
marks of the four subjects for which the exams were taken. For class 12
th
, the
instructions issued by the MHRD were followed since the exams for this class could
not be conducted due to COVID Pandemic. The free books were distributed to the
students. To solve the problem of malnourishment and to ascertain that the students
are provided with healthy meals the cooking cost has been directly transferred to the
students’ account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and the ration was
distributed by the teachers by visiting the houses of the students.
Students who are preparing for JEE Mains / Advanced and NEET were
provided online platforms for preparation. The State Govt. of Haryana has taken the
onus to provide education to 52 Lacs students in English as well as Hindi medium
studying in both Govt. and Private schools through dedicated TV channels. The
various problems faced by the students and parents especially regarding the
admission to the next class, payment of school fee in private schools, submission of
documents for admission etc. The State of Haryana has taken various steps which are
aligned with the directives of Government of India. Five strategies to support
students’ mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic were adopted. COVID-19 is
a challenging time and a multi-layered action plan to support students’ mental health
during the pandemic is necessary:
