ASSESSMENT OF SCHOLASTIC AND CO-SCHOLASTIC PERFORMANCE 
OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ 
: VISION National Education Policy 2020 
 
INTRODUCTION 
Since time immemorial the term evaluation is linked with examination, stress 
and anxiety. If we have to remove the ill effects of examinations we will have to 
make learning and teaching meaningful and joyous for children. Presently the board 
examinations have negative effect on the mental health of students. This paper 
addresses evaluation and assessment system in our country.
Education prepares citizens for a meaningful and productive life, and evaluation 
should bein such a way that it should provide credible feedback regarding the 
performance of students. The purpose of evaluation should be to motivate children 
to study without r threat. to recognize children as ‘slow learners’, or ‘gifted
students’, or ‘problem children’. to identify children who need correction and 
remedial strategies. Evaluation needs special testing instruments and training. From 
this perspective, the present processes of evaluation do not provide a complete 
analysis of an individual's talents and progress. If the aim of evaluation is to be 
achieved the teacher should be armed with the techniques of assessment and the 
various tools that will be ued for the purpose.. The primary aim of assessment is to 
improve the teaching-learning process and materials by measuring the extent to 
which the capabilities of learners have been developed. For this routine activities and 
exercises should be employed effectively to assess learning. Well-designed 
assessment and regular report cards provide learners with feedback and also serve to 
inform parents about the quality of learning and progress of their wards. Evaluation is 
not a means of encouraging competition and injecting students with feelings of 
inferiority. Education is concerned with preparing citizens for a meaningful and 
productive life, and evaluation should be a way of providing credible feedback..
Routine activities and exercises should be employed effectively to assess learning 
regularly. A credible assessment provides a detailed report, or certifies the 
completion of a course by providing information beginning with what she/he knows

and moving to what she/he needs to learn, through a continuous process of 
assessment and observation
