Annotation. The article analyzespoetic function of word and its changes during the 

XX century because of external reasons and literary trends. Taking East and West literature 

of the XX century as an example to accomplish the task, the main changes of demands of poetic 

means and its reasons. 

Each period has special methods, ideas, political-historical, social-financial, spiritual 

features and poetic function of word changes accordingly. The ability of an author to use 

strong literary means and characters can play a main role for the durability of a literary work.
