Problem: If I don’t get a joke straight away I find myself giving up.
Solution: Lots of people feel like this. For an experienced joke writer who
spends at least an hour a day writing, it doesn’t matter so much if you spend 10
minutes bashing one subject against another and there isn’t a joke there. But for
a new joke writer, it’s heart-breaking. I included the ideas that didn’t work when
I wrote up the class example to illustrate that they don’t all work out and that it’s
important to keep going. Try and think of yourself as an intrepid joke-
prospector: we know there’s joke gold there in that river, and we’ve got to sieve
through some earth to find it. Each time you bash an association against the
other subject, that’s a little shake of your sieve, and, if you keep sieving, there
will be gold in your pan.
