Problem: I feel frustrated reading the dictionary.
Solution: I tell the class only to expect one or two redefinable words per double
page spread of the dictionaries, but they always want more. Joke writing is often
a process, and if you get frustrated, you are saying ‘This part of the process is
unacceptable’. It’s not that difficult to read a dictionary. It might be a bit boring,
but if you read it, you will always find a couple of words to redefine and you
will have probably only been reading for 10 minutes. Why the frustration? I
guess it’s like sitting in line at a traffic light, hooting your horn. But suppose you
thought of it as part of the journey?
