CHAPTER 2 : LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT IN UNIVERSITIES

INTRODUCTION 
 
The review of related literature is discussed in this chapter which presents an overview of 
leadership and management in general and academic leadership in particular. The chapter 
focuses on academic women leaders and the ‘new managerialism’ with  an overview of 
women in leadership and management in universities including:  
 
•  the distinction between leadership and management 
•  women and management  
•  female leadership style 
•  critique of  female leadership style discourse 
•  leadership and management in the academe which takes account of 
transformational and transactional leadership 
•  leadership at departmental level comprising the roles and responsibilities of the 
academic head of department and exercise of power  
•  exercise of leadership and power from the perspective of women academic 
leaders and finally a  
•  summary and conclusion. 
 
The study of leadership and management in the academic context is particularly pertinent 
in this era of major transformation in higher education. Women in leadership and 
management presents an especially important area of investigation considering research 
findings about the suitability of their leadership attributes to the changing culture of 
higher education management.  In this chapter the author especially looks at what women 
experience in their exercise of leadership and management.
