DETERM INING W ORD STRESS
Stress is one o f the constitutive fea tu re s o f a w ord. O w ing to
stress the sound stru ctu re o f a w ord is p h o n etically com bined and
shaped an d form s a sem antic unit. S in gling o u t a syllable or sylla
bles o f a w ord b y great p ro m in en ce does n o t take place isolately;
it is a resu lt o f m an y factors am ong w h ich sem antic, m orph olo gi
cal (i.e. g ram m atical) rhythm ic and p h o n etic factors should be
m entioned. U su ally those factors are interd ep end ent. They are
very im p o rtant in stress p lacem en t and in d isting uishing the de
