Synopsis

Cultures glide and collide in a hilarious and "hot" updating of Gilbert and Sullivan's perennial classic The Mikado. Hot Mikado weaves a hilarious tale where despite life or death stakes, characters still find time to tap their toes and do their fair share of scatting.

In a land where outlandish laws sentence people to death for almost any indiscretion, jazz, and the blues, and gospel are spoken fluently. Hot Mikadoweaves a tale of hilarious proportions and despite the life or death stakes, characters still find time to tap their toes and do their fair share of scatting. Find out what happens when the clean lines and color of Japanese design combine with the big band sights and sounds of popular American song and dance!

The Audition/Callbacks

The auditions- Monday, 9/12 (dance only) & Tuesday, 9/13 (monologue and song) at 2:10 in Room B110
On Monday, please come dressed to move and dance. Our choreographer will show you a dance sequence for you to learn and perform. No prepared dances are necessary.

On Tuesday, please come prepared to sing (16 bars of prepared music or Happy Birthday). Monologues are encouraged, especially for those who have been in shows at Jackson and/or have taken theatre classes. Cold reads will also be available and you will read in addition to performing your monologue. It is very difficult to know when auditions will be over. Please bring snacks and plan to be flexible.
***You need to attend both days of auditions***
What Mr. Marshall is looking for…

Hot Mikado is a musical that features roles for strong singers. That means singing with confidence. For your audition, pick a song that demonstrates your strengths as a singer. Monologue choices should be modern and comedic. For your acting audition, if you bring good energy and make strong choices, you will have done a good job. Avoid simply standing and reading. Ask yourself what the character wants in this moment and try to show it. Remember, it is ok to ask

questions about the script and the characters before you begin your reading. Break a leg!

Rehearsal Commitment/ Attendance Policy

Actors are required to be at all rehearsals you are called for. It is nearly impossible to rehearse with even one person missing. Generally rehearsals are every day after school until 4:30. As we get closer to the performances, rehearsals will go later.

Performances are November 9th, 10th, 11th (Veterans Day), 12th, 17th, 18th, & 19th. Actors must also be at all performances... NO EXCEPTIONS!
***Strike for Hot Mikado will be on Monday, November 21st from 2pm until we are finished. All actors and crew members are expected to attend strike until dismissed.
You will be allowed a maximum of 1 unexcused absence/ 2 tardies during the rehearsal run of a play. Unexcused absences at a performance will result in not being able to audition for the next play. If the student isn’t able to uphold their commitment, they will forfeit their part. A complete rehearsal schedule will be issued to each student involved in the play on the first day of rehearsals. Changes to the rehearsal schedule will be made as far in advance as possible and sent to all parents via email. There will be Saturday calls.
Your Responsibility

Your cast mates will be relying on you so take care of all appointments and other business before rehearsals start. It is the student’s and their family’s responsibility to uphold this commitment so please plan ahead and voice any concerns to Mr. Marshall. This has been an issue in the past which hurts the quality of the production. Please take it upon yourself to be proactive and not allow this to continue to affect rehearsals.

Grades Policy

Students must be passing all of their classes in order to participate in JHS Theatre Society productions. Mr. Marshall will monitor grades weekly. If a student is failing one or more classes s/he will have 1 week to raise the grade. If after a week the student is still failing the class(es), s/he will not be permitted to participate until s/he can prove that s/he is passing all classes.

ASB Cards

It is required that all students who are involved with an ASB function must hold a valid ASB card. Hot Mikado is an ASB function and therefore will require that you have an ASB card. If you are cast you will have to purchase an ASB card. Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch may see Ms. Auchterlonie at the ASB office for an ASB card waiver.

Makeup and Shoes

All students who are cast will be required to provide their own makeup and shoes for the show. Basic makeup kits can be purchased for about $20 at Display and Costume on Evergreen Way. Store attendants can help you select the appropriate kit for your skin tone. If your makeup requires specialty items beyond what can be found in the basic kit, theatre society will purchase those items. It is important, for reasons of hygiene, that students not share makeup.

Final Note from Mr. Marshall

If you are not cast do not be discouraged from auditioning for the improv team, the mystery dinner, Summer Shove Off, choirs, or any other productions we might put on. Also, there are still many other areas you can be involved in with Hot Mikado. We will need students for tech, and joining Theatre Society is another way you can stay involved. Break a leg!!!
