Preliminary notes on stylistic syntax 
Stylistic study of the syntax begins with the study of the length and the structure of a 
sentence but is not reduced to it. Such things as word order, communicative function and 
punctuation are also to be considered. The effect of the majority of other syntactical 
stylistic devices depends on either the completeness or quantitative characteristics of the 
structure or on the arrangement of its members. 
There are a number of syntactical SDs: 
 Rhetorical question 
is a syntactical SD which contains a statement made in the form of 
a question. Interrogative sentence is more expressive that an affirmative one from the 
stylistic point of view.

Rhetorical questions are realized in different constructions: 
1.
Interrogative sentences (general and special questions).
“Is there such a thing as a happy life?”

Interrogative negative constructions.

Functions of rhetorical question. Rhetorical questions express doubt, assertion, or 
suggestion.Writers employ rhetorical questions for rhetorical effects and we cannot easily 
quantify the impact rendered by a rhetorical question. The idea becomes all the more 
powerful, and our interest is aroused to continue to read and enjoy the technical and 
aesthetic beauty that a rhetorical question generates. Moreover, it is a requirement in 
persuasive speeches. 
Inversion
comes from Latin word 
inversio 
and means ‘overturn’. The direct word 
order in Modern English is well known fact for everybody. But according to the writer’s 
aim the word order may be changed in the sentence after which the emphasis springs up.
They are realized in the following widely used patterns of Stylistic inversion:
