ART IN THE UNITED STATES
In the past years Americans have shown great interest in cultural events. Many big cities and university towns have built art centers, and now hold annual arts festivals.
The Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts in New York City completed in 1969. The Metropolitan Opera Company, the New York Philamonic, the School of Music and many others were built.
Another major cultural complex is the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Over­looking the Potomac River, this building houses three beautiful theaters for opera, dance, drama and music. It is also the home of American Film Institute, the National Sym­phony Orchestra, the Washington Opera and the American National Theater.
Music of ail kinds is very popular in the United States. For example, 22 million people went to symphony concerts for year.
Another example. There are 133 major opera companies in the United States. Opera productions are also brought to peoples living in the smaller cities,
The modern American theater has perfected an unusual art form: the musical play. These "musicals" combine tradi­tional and modern songs and dances. Examples include "Porgy and Bess," "Oklahoma," "South Pacific," "Hello, Dolly," and so on.
Now nearly every city has at least one school for teach­ing ballet to children.
There are several million painters and sculptors. Most of them make art their life work. The nation has more than 500 art schools.
