THE SOUTH
By the word "South" in the USA they mean the general area south of Pennsylvania and the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi.
Arkansas is a state where about three-fifth of the land is wooded. Arkansas ranks among the national leaders in cotton, rice, soy-bean and live-stock production,
The production of oil, the state's major mineral, has now become an important element in the economy. Arkansas also produces most of the nation's supply of bauxite ore, from which aluminium is extracted.
The capital of Arkansas is Little Rock.
Lousiana, a state richly historic, preserves French and Spanish customs. Lousiana's history belongs to the French who founded the colony, to the Germans and British who followed on their heels, to the Spanish who governed it,
Lousiana today is becoming increasingly industrialized. Lousiana is among the national leaders in mineral output; commercial fishing; rice, and sweet-potato production. Sugar is still grown and refined.
Lousiana is called the "American Ruhr".
Mississippi, has many natural resources and can be proud of one of the richest cultures in the country, created by such esteemed Mississippians as William Faulkner, American novelist, winner of the 1949 Nobel Prize for literature.
Tennessee has recently passed through a period of transition from a basically rural region to one in which industry prevails. Chemicals, textiles and food and metal products are among the major manufactures. The production of cotton and tobacco is also vital elements of the state's economy.
Memphis is the largest city in Tennessee and a port of entry, named after the ancient Egyptian city. The city's products include rubber goods, cotton-seed oil, textiles, farm machinery, and so on. The city is the site of the annual "Cotton Carnival".
Kentucky is in the centre of the "Bluegrass Country" and called the "Bluegrass State." There is much growth of blue-grass on its, rich soil. The name Kentucky has passed through various forms including the words "Cantucky", "Kain-tuck-ee", and "Kentuckee". It means "dark and bloody ground.
Kentucky has the nation's gold- reserves (at Fort Knox) and many farms and estates.
Alabama is traditionally agricultural, one of the states of the "Cotton Belt". Birmingham, Alabama's principal industrial city, named after Birmingham, England, was founded in 1871. The city has become the South's largest iron and steel producing centre.
Alabama has three nicknames: the "Cotton (Plantation) State"; the "Lizard State" and the "Yellowhammer State". The state bird is the yellowhammer.
Georgia is the nation's largest supplier of peanuts, and also ranks high in textiles, lumber, cotton, peaches and tobacco production.
Atlanta, the capital and largest city of Georgie, is the leading commercial, industrial, and distribution centre of the south-eastern- United States. It is also a cultural centre. We know that in Atlanta the Olympic Games took place in 1996.
North Carolina is a leader in both small-farm agriculture, and business-applied research, and the nation's major producer of tobacco.
North Carolina's tobacco area is dominated by two cities, Durham, the older "tobacco capital", and Winston-Salem, the new one.
North Carolina's nicknames are: the Land of the Sky (because of its many mountain peaks) and the "Turpentine State" "(much turpentine is produced from its pine forests).
South Carolina has given, the nickname "Palmetto State." The palmetto, a small palm-tree with fan-shaped leaves, grows much in South Carolina.
Many tourists come to Charleston, which was the most important city and port south of Philadelphia.
South Carolina is also called the "Rice Stale" because it produces and handles much rice. There are many swampy lands and the state has a nickname the "Swamp State" as well.
Florida was named by Juan Ponce de Leon (1460—1521) — Spanish explorer, noted for his discovery (1512) of Florida. He discovered it on Easter Sunday thc Pascua Florida). Besides thc whole region which he saw was covered with flowers. Florida's nicknames arc. the "Flower State," or the "Land of Flowers", the "Orange State," etc.
In 1964 Disney Productions (a company founded by Wall Disney (1901—1966), US motion picture and television producer of animated cartoons, who opened "Disneyland" in California, then started the construction of "Disney World" in Florida) bought a piece of central Florida woodland. In October 1971 "Disney World" was opened.
Miami, a world-famous resort in Florida, is a Spanish city. It is nearly a quarter Hispanic. Most public signs are written in English and Spanish.
