Michael Faraday was born in 1791 in London. He did not have much schooling because his parents were not very rich and when he was 14 he had to start work. Luckily, his first job was in a book shop where, being already in­terested in science, he read any scientific books he could find; this, of course, was very useful for his future work. Well, Faraday soon decided that his real vocation (that means the job that would really suit him, the work that he felt quite capable of doing) was science and when he was 21 he was fortunate enough to .become assistant to Humphry Davy, the famous scientist. This, of course, was a very good position for such - a young man. "While working with Davy, Faraday did a. great deal of valuable work — among other things he made an important electrical discovery and found two unknown chlorides of carbon, and he also got mar­ried — although that's not work really, I suppose.
In 1825 Faraday became director of the laboratory of the Royal Institution in London and began to give lectures. Just imagine what an important position this was — head of the most important scientific organization in Great Britain — and Faraday was only 34. It was at this time that his most important experiments began especially with electricity. I'm afraid I'm not a scientist and I can't explain exactly what he did but I expect you'll found out sooner or later in your physics and chemistry lessons. One experiment which was successful was his attempt to show that mag­netism could produce electricity, in 1831 he proved that this was possible. After this he made a whole series of electrical descoveries.
But Faraday worked so hard that he became completely exhausted and had to rest for a long time. Faraday, how­ever, didn't like resting — he had too much work for that — and in 1844 he was back in his laboratory begin­ning a new series of experiments. In 1S50 Faraday tried to establish by experiments a relation between gravity and electricity but after several years he had not found what he was looking for. But this did not shake his faith as the report on these experiments shows ... .
