Introduction

INTRODUCTION
English literature as well as art of other countries of the world has a deep influence on us, our outlook and daily lifestyle. When we talk about British literature instantly to our mind come figures of the brightest representatives of it, like William Shakespeare, Chaucer, John Milton, Agatha Christie, Charles Dickens, immediately we think about the most famous characters like Sherlock Holmes, Tom Jones and so on and on. From the first days of acquaintance with the English literature we became familiar that it has as any other countries’ literature eras, periods of rising and falling in writing, differences in styles.
British literature has such long lasting periods from the time of Middle ages till our time, like: Anglo-Saxon era, era of Middle Ages, period of Renaissance, Classicism, Romanticism, The Victorian period. Anglo-Saxon period is characterized with its orality. The works of art were told from one person to another, from elder generation to young one. The mostly used style of writing of this period was a poem. Heroic elements, Christianity, irony were the most essential characteristics of this era. Most of English poets are anonymous. English literature of middle ages includes the period of 12-14^th centuries. In this period was invented printing machine and the writings were started being typed and orality was decreased. Representatives of middle ages are Geoffrey Chaucer. Strangely enough, Chaucer was not particularly known for his poetry when he was alive—even though we now think of him as the go-to poet of medieval England. The Gawain Poet, Margery Kempe, Sir Thomas Malory.
