Conclusions

The analyses presented in this study provide an answer to the fact that proper names are frequently used in English idioms. We looked at 97 idioms, 73 of which had personal names and 24 of which had place names. There are various types of origins for personal and place names in English idioms. Despite this, we identified the following six groups of personal name origins:

• 
  Mythical
  
• 
  Derived from religion and based on characters from movies, books, and cartoons.
  
• 
  The real people.
  
• 
  Etymology based on folklore.
  
• 
  Others.
  

The analysis revealed that idioms with personal names are used more frequently in English than idioms with place names.
Almost all of the place names are genuine and not made up. Names derived from religion and characters in books, films, and other media were the most common among personal names. The number of idioms derived from mythology with personal names was the smallest.
