Partnership (TPP), 12 APEC mem­
bers have recently agreed to join. 
(China and Russia are not part of 
this partnership.) The TPP should 
make it much easier for its members 
to trade with each other. The M anila 
summit was the first time the lead­
ers o f all these countries have met 
since joining the TPP.
Before and during the summit 
the leaders arranged many bilat­
eral meetings. These are discus­
sions, or talks, between the leaders 
o f two countries. For example, M r 
Obama had private talks with M r 
Aquino and Japan’s prime minis­
ter. M r Aquino held separate meet­
ings with the presidents o f Chile 
and Mexico.
One tradition o f APEC summits 
is to arrange for all the leaders to 
wear the host country’s national 
dress for one evening. Last year’s 
APEC meeting took place in Bei­
jing, the capital o f China. There, 
the leaders wore traditional Chinese 
outfits. These are single coloured 
plain suits with high collars.

In Manila, the leaders were given 
a traditional shirt to wear. It’s called 
a ‘Barong Tagalog’. These shirts are 
made from lightweight material and 
decorated with embroidery, or sew­
ing patterns. They are worn over a 
white T-shirt and not tucked into the 
top o f the trousers. □

The fish are believed to be good for 
people’s health. They contain im­
portant vitamins and proteins. In re­
cent years many salmon farms have 
been set up.
