The bar charts illustrate what internal and external factors determine how pleasant respondents found their workplaces. Information is displayed for those over and those under 35 years of age. Looking more closely at internal factors, over 50% of respondents in each age group agreed that team spirit, a competent boss and job satisfaction all made an important contribution to pleasant working conditions. However, the younger age group rated team spirit as more significant than a competent boss whilst the over-35s would rather have a capable boss. Respect from colleagues was more important to the over-35s but was the internal factor considered least important by both age groups. The two groups agreed less when it came to the external factors. The under-35s are seeking prospects for promotion and personal development, although over 60% of this age group also rate job security and salary as important. For the over-35s, job security and remuneration are highly desirable, with less than 50% considering development or promotion opportunities a significant factor.
