The line graph describes trends in birth and death rates in Ireland from 1901 and predicts these changes up to the year 2101. Between 1901 and the present, the birth rate has been consistently higher than the death rate. There were 20,000 births at the beginning of the period, rising to a peak of 66,000 in 1961. This number fluctuated wildly until the end of the 1900s. The graph then forecasts a slight decline in number of births until the end of the period projected. Comparing the death rate, we can see a more steady increase from just below 10,000 in 1901 to nearly 30,000 at the present time. The number of deaths is expected to increase dramatically until around 2061 (overtaking that of births in 2041) before levelling off at roughly 60,000. The gap experienced at the beginning of the period is expected to reverse by 2101.
